WHAT good is nepotism if you can’t have a bit of a nep from time to time? Here goes.
My partner in comedy capers Graham Davies is taking to the stage this week for the phenomenon that is Rawhide Raw, the weekly open mic showcase at Prohibition on Bold Street.
The blurb says: “a chance to see a fine blend of the hottest new comedy talent and some deluded idiots whose friends have told them that they are funny, Rawhide Raw is a night for all those who enjoy both comedy and watching people fail.”
Brilliant. Not sure if that makes him the hot new talent or the deluded idiot, but nevertheless I’ll be down there on Wednesday night doing my bit to keep the clap-o-meter going in an endeavour to spare Davies (former Post journo, current Border TV presenter and along with me, co-writer of oft-rejected sitcom Puppets on Fire) the indignity of the gong – five other willing victims and two more seasoned newbies will be keeping it all ticking over nicely.
Tickets are the proverbial snip at £3 and can be booked on 0870 787 1866 or online.
In other news, German stand up Henning Wehn made it through his entire set at Capital of Comedy without incident this time (ie not being booed off on a wave of xenophobic nationalism, see previous posts for the full story) – the same cannot entirely be said for co-header Parrot, who travelled all the way from the wilds of Scotland only to be left a mere ten minutes for his slot thanks to Wehn and second act Paul Bettany enjoying themselves too much and staying on stage too long.
Wehn’s joke about comic timing, involving a gag about two guys discussing an Austria - Hungary football match, is sublime, and his apparent comfort on stage, as well as the sheer fun he has messing up British heads, make him a compelling character to watch.
In other other news, I inadvertently predicted the best picture Oscar winner two blogs ago. That’s never happened before. With anything. I feel weird.
