Coogan, we love you

I’VE returned from my holidays to the rather exciting news that Steve Coogan is coming to the Liverpool Arena on his newly announced (and not at all bitterly titled) “Steve Coogan is Alan Partridge and other less successful characters”.

Ah, anyone would think he was doing it for the fun of it and not for the taxman, but still. It got me thinking. It isn’t hard to think of enough reasons to make him the subject of The Comedy Blog’s second pointless random list – The Unofficial and By No Means Definitive top ten Steve Coogan moments:

10. He is not an animal
I Am Not an Animal was a rather strange animated series by the wonderful Peter Baynam about a group of talking creatures from a vivisection lab. Coogan did some of the voices, including that of a deluded sparrow searching for fame. It was a bit odd.

9. Kicking ass with Jackie Chan
Okay, I didn’t see his remake of Around the World in 80 Days, and I’m not sure who did. But if the call comes in that you’ve got the chance to be in a movie with Jackie Chan, who cares if it’s Gigli? – I’d take it.

8. A part in Curb Your Enthusiasm
Larry David wants you in Curb, you are internationally funny. It’s that simple. In the latest series, Coogan plays a hapless therapist caught up in a fake mugging-gone-wrong:

7. Commendably disgusting sleaze
"Yes, I am pregnant with Steve's baby," said one Courtney Love back in 2005. She wasn’t. "What does it make me look like that I have slept with Alan Partridge?" It wasn’t the first, the last, or the seediest Coke-Fuelled Romp ™ Coogan would ever be involved in, but by God, it was the most bizarre. Unexpected. A bit gross. Hilarious.

6. Pauline Calf

The timeless British hilarity of a man in fishnets, twinned with the early 90s comedy zeitgeist and the North-Western propensity for the phrase “bag o’ shite” – Coogan was on to something right from the start.

5. Michael

Michael, the kind-of sweet-yet-plainly-terrifying Geordie best friend of Alan Partridge (a bond only born of his employment at Alan’s favourite garage forecourt) was played to perfection by Simon Greenall. His signature dish was beans in a cup. He was, without doubt (and I’m a comedy blogger, not a Radio 1 presenter, I can’t use this phrase lightly) comedy genius.

4. Baby Cow

The Mighty Boosh, Nighty Night, Human Remains, Marion & Geoff… none of them would exist as we now know and love them without this production company, set up by Coogan and partner Henry Normal.

2 = I’m Alan Partridge

A comedy classic that needs no introduction, as influential and as quotable now as ever. In 2002, no-one called Dan was safe:

2 = Being a better Tony Wilson than Tony Wilson

More classic Coogan as he took on the career-defining role (Partridge aside) of St Anthony H Wilson of the North West and Madchester, in Liverpudlian Frank Cotrell Boyce’s fantastic 24-Hour Party People (2002).

1. Knowing Me, Knowing You

Aha! This studio-based show had an air of abandon - not to mention absurdity - that the more traditional sitcom format of I’m Alan Partridge (which was to follow) couldn’t quite afford. Taking the character from behind the The Day Today sportsdesk and into the chat show environment was a stroke of brilliance from writers Coogan, Baynam (see no 10) and Armando Iannucci. Here’s a bit of a defining moment:
