This week in comedy

By Vicky Anderson on Jan 18, 10 10:54 AM

There's stand ups, a farewell to the Christmas shows and Hairspray galore

CLUBS

The Slaughterhouse has a bit of variety over Friday and Saturday (Jan 22 & 23), with Sarah Millican (see clip) and Mat Reed co-headlining each night respectively, plus troopers Addy Borg and MC Chris Cairns doing both shows. It's the same bill over at sister venue the Slug and Lettuce as well, with Ste Porter as compere.

Ray Peacock, Mike Wilkinson, Mat Reed (again), and Howard Read are on the bill on Friday and Saturday at Comedy Central at Baby Blue in the Albert Dock.

At Rawhide, Duncan Oakley, Dave Williams and two guest acts get things started on Thursday night. Duncan and Dave will be joined by Anthony J Brown and Mike Milligan for the Friday and Saturday shows.

Don't forget open mic night Rawhide Raw starts up again on Tuesday night (January 19) at its new weekly home, Baa Bar on Myrtle Street.

ELSEWHERE

The mighty Henry Rollins takes to the stage at the O2 Academy on Wednesday night (Jan 20) for an evening of spoken word, and there's stand up at the Edge Hill University's Rose Theatre on Tuesday night, with Ray Kane, Kevin Dewsbury, Andrew Ryan and compere Alan Donegan. Kevin, his biog says, is "constantly sought after for his acting work, most recently appearing in an advert for Nat West Student Bank Accounts". Make of that what you will.

THEATRES

It's the final week for Christmas shows Merry Ding Dong at the Royal Court and the rock 'n' roll panto at the Everyman. Aw. Bye then!

And two-man show The Friendship Experiment, from Liverpool-based company Big Wow, is on at the Unity until Jan 23. "Like a buddy movie, but on stage", they say, while citing their inspirations as The Fast Show and Vic & Bob.

COMING SOON

Goodness me. I didn't know Phill Jupitus had been strutting his stuff in the West End as Edna Turnblad in the stage version of Hairspray. But he has. See pic. And it's just been announced that he's coming this way, if fat blokes in drag are your sort of thing. Les Dennis will be joining him as husband Wilbur, at the Empire from August 17 to September 4. But will anything ever beat Divine and Jerry Stiller in the original? (Hint: NO)
